While inquiring about tea rations on the AC some one sent me this recipie for pine needle tea. apparently this tea has been around since the early to mid 19th century.
It is supposed to be very high in vitamin A and C (6 times the Vitamin C as 1 lemon)
The recipe is as follows
If you can find a white pine their needles are supposed to be the best for this, if not any pine will do.
Pick the Greenest freshest needles you ban fined and chop them finely so oyu end up with about half a cup.
Add your needles to the boiling water and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the volume of water has reduced by about 1/3.
Allow it to steep for anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight, depending on how strong you like your tea. The result will be a reddish colored tea with a mild taste.
Tips and Warnings
! The longer the tea boils, the less Vitamin C will be available.
! Add honey to help improve the taste, or just drink it as it is!
! DO NOT consume this tea if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. It has been known to cause the death of an unborn child within 24 hours! (though no one is sure why as of yet--always consult your physician first.)
Good luck with it, I am also not responsiable if it tastes bad or makes you sick, but to be fair i will try this myself, you never know it may be pretty good....but I doubt it.
Also After some research and articles were sent to me, it appears that the tea that comes in hard bricks is not proper and was not even available in Britain or the United States. The hard brick for tea was strictly an Asian process. Tea was not as popular as coffee, hence it wasn't issued as much. However when it was Issued in the Federal Army it was issued in 1lbs 8oz quantities and it was in a ground up state. The Confederates were issued the same type of rations only less than the union, however there is nothing i can find that says they were issued tea.
